Ireland Political system

Ireland Ireland - a parliamentary republic. The President is elected by the people for a term of 7 years (next election in 2004). Prime Minister nominated by the House of Representatives and appointed by the president. Parliament - bicameral, consists of the Senate (60 seats - 49 are elected by the universities from among candidates nominated by the five committees and 11 - are appointed by the Prime Minister, all senators are elected for a term of 5 years) and the House of Representatives (166 seats - members are elected by universal suffrage on the basis of proportional representation for 5-year term). The President is the head of state and is elected by direct popular vote, unless the post claiming two or more candidates. Executive power is exercised on the basis of government decisions, which is subordinate to the House of Representatives. Head of Government is the Prime Minister.
